A Prayer for a Gentle Voice

O Lord, grant me a delicate heart made pure
And let my words be gentle to the ear.
May Your sacred light within mine eyes endure,
And allow my voice to sing of love so dear.

If ever I think the song is mine to sing,
Then show me, Lord, that You alone create.
If I try to lead, or rise on mine own wing,
Then lift my soul as I meditate.

Let love ring sweet from every note I sing,
As sunlight falls warm on frozen land.
Make me humble and mild, and fling
Away all sorrow that may still stand.
And in my voice let only this be true:
That my ego is naught—but all I am is You.
