Retribution of the Poet’s Garden
(An original Shakespearean (English) sonnet based on my original poem “Lovers in The Poet’s Garden, Arles 1888”)
In the poet’s garden that day stood they
Holding forth as though no ties bound her heart
Youthful eyes woke her readiness to stray
From sacred vows and from her oath depart
Her hand cool a moment before grew warm
She felt the urge vanquish the wage of sin
What justice waits for one who dares to harm
The sacred vows held deep beneath the skin?
He said his mate for six weeks would be gone
His scribbled their address a burning lure—
She chose his arms betraying hearth and home
Her flaming mind a vessel still impure
Let retribution clean that garden’s soil
Grant forgiveness for which her heart must toil
