Emily’s Moth-Breath
She whispers; have you not heard her?
Between the lines of interpretation
And analysis that cover her discoveries.
From the madness of theory, her butterfly hints
Rescue our humanness and give us back
Our own fleet-footed lives.
Her brain bowed wider than the sky of psycho-
Analysis, that cloud-filled busyness that
Straightjackets curved minds.
She lives with souls who choose their own
Society with as much precision as she did,
With as much deliberation as she could.
Where stars look like eyes and rivers like veins
Where birds peck crumbs and every cell
Is an altar to the spirit, she sings.
But when she meets the coils of evil,
She warns us because she knew its sting
And found the balm that eases it—
Immortality! Immortality!—
Not just for a few but for all
That ever felt or ever knew.
