If the Moon Became a Coin
In Memoriam
Helen Richardson
June 27, 1923 – September 5, 1981
If the moon became a coin in my hand,
I would buy back my soul.
I would buy back my body
And grow roses filled with dollars.
I would not break my back
Over tomatoes or gold.
If the moon became a coin in my hand,
I would buy back my soul.
I would buy back my body
And not grieve my heart
Over the pennies
Of this joyless world.
If the moon became a coin in my hand,
I would not wail against these walls.
But if the sun is growing cold,
I would buy back my body.
