Ripples in a Dream
elegy for a monster
At water’s edge your dark cloud haunts the stream
We speak of heaven, earth, and love-poem’s art
You ask if I still keep you in my dream
Trees lean down in listening to us scheme
Dusk douses the daylight out of its heart
At water’s edge your dark cloud haunts the stream
You wonder if absence kills what we seem
Does distance dim the image you impart?
You ask if I still keep you in my dream
I pick a stone to pitch into the gleam
Where the water’s dark shadow seems to start
At water’s edge your dark cloud haunts the stream
The ripples spread in light flecks through the beam
They fade. We know not whither they depart
You ask if I still hold you in my dream.
Does your brute mind ever long to redeem?
Did love ever hide beneath your stone heart?
At water’s edge your dark cloud haunts the stream
You ask if I still keep you in my dream
